I am about to take a yoga class and was wondering what do I look for in a mat. I am 6 ft tall.?
I am wondering if a person needs to be sized for a yoga mat. Thanks in adnvance.
You can go to a health store and get sized and custom fitted and waste alot of money on a yoga mat, but I wouldn't reccomend that.
The secret is, go to a camping or outdoors store and buy a foam sleeping pad. This is the exact same thing and the exact same material as a yoga pad for about one fifth the price.

Yoga Mats - The One Essential Investment For Your Yoga Class
There are many reasons why a Yoga Mat is an indispensable part of practicing Yoga. The main advantage is that they provide an additional support and stability to the Yoga practitioner. This is especially true for people who are new to Yoga and are still unsure of the various asanas (stances). Therefore, instead of being worried about loosing balance, one can concentrate on the Yoga session instead and learn the asana in a more effective manner.
In addition to this, a Yoga Mat helps avoid any injuries that may occur due to either slipping or losing balance. Yoga Mats also ensure that the body is warm and prevent energy that is generated for the body from being passed to the floor.
Hygienically, a Yoga Mat also prevents any bacteria and germs from passing from the bare floor to the practitioner. This is especially true if the Yoga sessions are held in a public set-up where the exposure to these elements is greatly increased.
Having a personal Yoga Mat is the best and most useful Yoga prop as it allows you to complete your Yoga session without any worry and provides comfort and support as well.
There are many reasons why using a Yoga Mat is a preferred option than the bare floor, carpet or grass for that matter.
Surfaces such as concrete and tile are firstly too hard and very uncomfortable to practice on. The feet have a tendency to slip especially on a tiled surface. Resting for extended periods on the knees or sitting in a Padmasana (lotus position) on a tiled or concrete surface can be very painful.
Carpets may provide the cushioning needed to carry out asanas but they, too, have a penchant for causing slipping and difficulties in achieving good grip and balance. Added to this, carpets tend to be dusty and may cause sneezing and discomfort particularly when carrying out asanas that require one to be face downward or in the prone position.
Lastly, a lot of people advocate practicing Yoga on grass so that the body will be in contact with the earth and nature. However, grass always contains insects and bugs which are mostly invisible to the naked eye and which may cause bites and allergies. These asides, practicing on grass almost always makes the body itch because its sharp leafs cause tiny scratches and cuts of the skin.
Yoga mats are available in a variety of different sizes, colours, thickness, textures and materials. Plastic has the disadvantage of being sticky and may end up causing greater discomfort than comfort. Choosing a Yoga Mat should provide you with the support and comfort that is needed to make the practice of Yoga a more enjoyable and complete one. Please choose one wisely and carefully.
