Natural rubber is a poly isoprene produced naturally in the same of the rubber tree. Rubber trees grow in relatively tropical regions of the world.
Natural rubber cannot be made into synthetic rubber. There are a number of processes for modifying natural rubber to have more varied uses. The simplest of these is "vulcanization" which can be accomplished by heating molten rubber with powdered sulfur. This cross links the polymer chains to make a more durable polymer.
Synthetic rubber first came about during world war II when the Japanese controlled the majority of natural rubber production. To have adequate supplies for war, the US government commissioned a massive research program to make synthetic rubber through various types of polymerization, such as butadiene/styrene etc.

Here's an interesting statistic: 10% of all condom users who are exposed to the latex protiens in latex that are added to rubber products are allergic and exposed. These users aren't just allergic to the latex in condoms; there are over 40,000 products that require a latex application, everything from automotive tires to apparel, to heavy industrial uses like foam. The allergic properties of latex come from the naturally occurring chemicals that make up the latex in its rawest form: as sap from South African and Latin American trees. While there are ways to reduce the allergenic properties of latex during production, they cannot be eliminated. And that's where Vystar comes in.
Mr. Doyle gave me a brief history of the demand for hypoallergenic, or "reduced" allergenic latex, and how hard Vystar has been working to provide a solution. During the tremulous years of the late 1980's, the AIDS crisis was gaining recognition and healthcare professionals had been required to begin wearing those ubiquitous latex gloves when treating patients, leading to a huge explosion of latex glove production in Southeast Asia, a region not particularly known for its quality production levels. The factories ignored standard western safety procedures that involved how the latex is washed, processed, and dropped into the product, sparking a wave of allergy-connected health issues during the 90's and today.
Mr. Doyle said the issue has been getting better as production quality improves, but the need for Vytex NRL is obvious. The Envy condom received FDA 501(k) clearance in 2009 and became the first commercial product to use Vystar's flagship developmental offering. "Vytex is the culmination of years of research resulting in a very good natural rubber latex product that maintains all of the good properties of latex such as barrier protection and elasticity, and yet, we have been able to remove the proteins that cause some people to have allergies" said Mr. Doyle. He went on to talk about market size and the potential for Vystar's NRL to be included in every industrial application available. "The potential market size is huge, just as a raw material. It is a $3 billion market selling to the companies who produce gloves, condoms, catheters, etc."
Checking into the first quarter's earning reveals a company with almost no debt and increasing strength in cash flow. Total assets are $1.2M versus $336K in total liabilities, a quick ratio of about 3.5; a strong indication the company could access credit to finance growth in the future. Total revenues were $83K for the first quarter 2010 compared with only $11K for the same period in 2009, attributable to sales of the Envy condom.
So how's business?
"We have a solid core of investors in the healthcare arena. We've never taken a loan, we've never worked with any venture capital groups, and we're doing very well in the financing area". For a company preparing to tackle such huge market potential, those are the exact qualities others would be Envious for.
